hard with the skillet and poured his dinner on him and walked out. When she returned Ben was gone. She learned he and the girl had been lovers before he met Mercy. The gossip was Ben and the girl left town. Mercy didn’t hear from Ben again and no one spoke about him without Mercy cussing them out.

The years with Ben seemed to age Mercy and with her girls grown, Mercy encouraged Gertie to pursue her dream to work in the State Department, mainly to get her out of the house, and Jessica, went back to Oklahoma to work and live.

“Madear, will you be okay by yourself? I hate to leave you,” Gertie said.

“You better get out this house and live your life. I’m sure going to live mine,” Mercy said dismissively.

“I’m scared,” Gertie said.

“Scared of what? You’ve been a good student, go live your dreams,” Mercy said.

“Okay, well I got the position with the State Department in Washington and they might send me to Europe or Africa,” Gertie said.

“Great, send me a postcard,” Mercy said.

Inez had completed college and was a teacher, she had a fiancé but he was killed in World War II so she never considered marrying or dating after his death. She believed that he was her soul mate and to find another would be to disgrace his memory and cheapen what they had.

Mercy of course thought Inez was crazy.
